Happy Holidays
I am so grateful to all the families and children I am privileged to work with this year at Royal Oak. Thank you so much - I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!
Rolls Requested!
Hello all!
If it is possible, would you be willing to collect your toilet paper/paper towel rolls over the holidays and bring in on the first day back? Grade 3’s are doing a large science lesson.
Thanks so much!

The Week that T'was
Science - In Science, we have been going to different classes and working on challenges. One challenge was building a Lego bridge. (And our class has beaten all the other classes so far). We have learned that an arch is good for balance, as are triangles. Beams are also good for supporting a heavy load. On bridges there are compression (a pushing force), tension (a pulling force), as well as torsion (twisting) and shear (sliding). In Mr. Duggan's class we built a suspension bridge out of popsicle sticks and other materials. The bridge had to be 90 cm long and 40 cm tall.
For Stephen's Backpacks, we filled 100 backpacks and there was even extra stuff that didn't fit so we filled 2 more boxes! Thank you for all your donations!
Math - In math we have been working on subtracting and answering word problems. Once we were done, we played new math games on the computer. There is a fun subtraction with regrouping game called "MathMan" in the more activities section of the game.
Language Arts - We have been reading and viewing legends and myths. With a partner we made a story map from a legend using pictures and words. Our next step will be to video us retelling that legend and putting it on Iris.
Gym - We have been playing parachute games.
Music - We have been learning,"Don't Throw Your Junk in My Backyard" and a xylophone rhythm.
Stuart has been up to no good. Yesterday he went into Mrs. Libbey's class and had a campfire with Mindy and today Stuart made a naughty or nice list. We cannot understand why he would possibly consider Ms. Rutland and Mrs. Perry AND Mr. Duggan naughty.
Next Week:
Caroling - on Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning in the gym.
Choir - Monday is the last choir practice and on the 19th is the field trip to the Library and Robert Thirsk High School. Remember to wear dark bottoms and a light top or something Christmasy (if possible!)
We are looking for a parent volunteer for next Wednesday afternoon. Please let Ms. Rutland know if you can come.

This Week at School
Phew! That was a busy week! Here is a snapshot!
Math - We have been working the subtraction this week - from 1-3 digit numbers. Students have been practicing taking away using base-10 materials and then showing how that looks with the subtraction "stacking" formula. We will continue this concept for the next couple of weeks.
Inquiry - Students have been working on their Ingenuity Challenge. The theme is "There has to be a better way." Mrs. Libbey's group has been working on solving the icy hill issue and Ms. Rutland's group has been tackling graffiti in the washroom. Stay tuned for further updates!
Social Studies - Students have begun exploring the idea of "Quality of Life" and did a group activity where they had to explore their wants versus their needs.
Language Arts - Most students have completed their persuasive paragraph around a given issue. Students were tasked with writing an introduction with an attention grabbing hook; 3 reasons with supporting details; and an "end with a bang" conclusion. Please read your child's paragraph on GoogleDocs.
Reminder: There is no school tomorrow or on December 22.
The Holiday Market is at Royal Oak School on Saturday, December 9th.
Have a nice long weekend!

This Week at School
We found an "elf on the smartboard." We named him Stuart Monty Rutland. He will be watching everyone to see if they are naughty or nice. We wonder if he will be just like "Monty the elf" from Grade 1. Monty was very very sneaky.
On Monday in Gym we will be playing with the Kinball. This week we started relay races including scooter races, caterpillar, ball passing, and hula hoop.
We started the Ingenuity Challenge from Beakerhead. We had to think about problems in the school and we eliminated some ideas until we got down to 2 problems: graffiti and too icy outside. Mrs. Libbey and Ms. Rutland each have a group and each group has to design something to make to fix the problem. The main material must be CARDBOARD!! Watch to see what we come up with!
We have been working on our Persuasive Writing. We tried writing an introduction including a "Hook" to catch our reader's attention. Please read my paragraph on Google Docs.
We learned a new math game called Race from 100. Some people tried Race from 500 and even Race from 1000! Ask me how to play.
On Thursday, we watched a video about bridge building. Here is the link if you want to watch at home:
Bridge Video
Reminders
- Please bring in your November Reading Log!
- We are still collecting donations for Stephen's Backpack
