This Week at School

Olivia - Today is Orange Shirt day.
Lily - Orange Shirt Day comes from the story of when a First Nations girl was told that she had to go to a school far away.  Her Grandma gave her a new orange shirt but then they took it away and gave her a uniform.  And she never saw her shirt again. We wear orange shirts to represent what she was wearing and to promise to never have residential schools again.
Tobe - We went to the wetlands and saw some animals like muskrats, ducks, and even a dead bird.  We also explored the plants and water.  We saw a big pile of feathers on the ground and we don't know what happened.
Simon - We did a math problem about flashing lights.
Bryan - We learned about animal classification.  That is how scientists sort different animals.
Olivia - Today we are meeting our Grade 1 buddies!

Reminders:
- Our Friday journals came home today.  Please read and comment if you'd like!
- Picture day notices came home today.  Picture day is October 12th.
- Scholastic orders are due Monday.
- There is a volunteer notice in my backpack.
- Tuesday, October 2 is our Terry Fox Run.  We are collecting Twoonies for Terry.

Terry Fox Run

On Tuesday, October 3rd, Royal Oak School and William D. Pratt School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run.  Students will gather on the field between the two schools to take part in the annual 30-minute run, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30am.  Students attending afternoon Kindergarten are welcome to attend, if they are accompanied by a supervising adult.

On this day please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather (including running shoes).  If the weather is poor, students will walk inside the school during their PE class time.

We are asking that each child donate a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry Fox Foundation during the week of September 26 - October 3rd

All parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child/children in this event are more than welcome.

We do require a fair number of volunteers for this event to ensure its success.  If you have security clearance and if you are able to volunteer during the run time, kindly contact our school Volunteer Coordinator at rosvolunteers@gmail.com.

Thank you for your continued support.

This Week at School

Maguire - Today and tomorrow is Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Bryan - The book fair is open today and tomorrow.
Tobe - Today we talked about Circle of Courage.
Jonah - We started reading a novel together called "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane."

Ms. Rutland - Next Thursday afternoon we are planning a trip to the wetlands to observe the signs of fall and hopefully some animal habitats.  We will need 1-2 volunteers.  If you have a current Police Security Clearance and would like to join us from about 12:55-2:45, please email me at mlrutland@cbe.ab.ca

Our class did a descriptive paragraph on Google Docs today.  Your child has an email address (their first name and last initial, plus a number@educbe.ca) so that you can access their work at home.  Their password for Google Docs is the same as their password for Iris.

In math, we worked on addition and subtraction word problems, focusing on choosing a strategy and clearly stating our answer.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the conferences!

Book Truck Visit

Tomorrow the Book Truck from the Calgary Public Library will be here and our class is scheduled to visit it at 9:30.  All students will be able to look at the books, however, only students with a library card may sign out a book to bring home.  If you returned your blue form with the number on it, then no action is required.  If you haven't signed up for a free library card for your child, I understand it can be done at home on the CPL website.  If you do sign up, please send in their library card number tomorrow.
Thanks!

Blue Forms

Please return your child's forms from the opening package if you haven't already done so.  Our class will have the opportunity to visit the Book Truck from the Calgary Public Library on Wednesday morning, and it will expedite the process if you have returned the blue form with their library card number on it.
Thank you!

Safey Week

This week is safety week at Royal Oak School.  Today we had a fire drill and a class discussion about being safe off the school grounds.  Tomorrow's evacuation has been rescheduled to Wednesday morning due to a conflict in the calendar.  Wednesday afternoon will also have a practice lock down.

Welcome

September 1, 2017

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I am excited to begin this year and meet my students and their families. This is my 2nd year teaching Grade 3 at Royal Oak School and prior to that I taught Kindergarten to Grade 5 at Elboya School for many years. Royal Oak School is a dynamic place where staff and students are always learning. We have a talented group of Grade 3 teachers and we are looking forward to a year of exciting learning opportunities together.

I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer.  I was able to spend a lot of time with my family and friends, though it is nice to be returning to the routines of the fall.  It will take us some time to settle in and get to know each other, but I am confident we will have a great year together!

Please feel free to contact me throughout the year with any questions, comments, or concerns.  See you Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Mandy Rutland
